Signs the battery is on the way out
- Slow, laboured cranking, especially first thing in the morning
- Headlights that dim noticeably while cranking
- Needing a jump more than once
- Dash warning lights flickering on start-up
- Battery date sticker older than three years
- Swollen case or corrosion built up on the terminals
Why heat kills batteries here
High under-bonnet temperatures accelerate the chemical breakdown inside a lead-acid battery and evaporate the electrolyte. A car that lives outside on the Gold Coast in summer is working its battery far harder than the same car in Melbourne.
Short trips make it worse — the alternator never gets enough running time to put back what starting took out.
Getting the right battery
Fitting a cheap battery with the wrong cold cranking amps or the wrong terminal layout is a false economy. Cars with stop-start systems need an AGM or EFB battery and, on many European models, the new battery has to be registered with the body control module or the charging system will cook it.
We check what your car actually requires, fit it, clean the terminals and test the alternator output before we leave — because a battery that died young often died because the charging system is at fault.
