Starter or battery? How we tell the difference
Most cars towed in for a 'dead starter' actually have a tired battery or a corroded earth strap, and most 'flat batteries' that keep coming back are a failing alternator. Replacing the wrong part is the expensive mistake we are here to avoid.
On site we load-test the battery, check the voltage drop across the terminals and earths, then measure the current the starter draws while cranking. A starter pulling excessive amps or nothing at all is confirmed faulty before we quote you a part.
Starter motor replacement cost on the Gold Coast
Price comes down to the car. On a lot of four-cylinder Japanese sedans the starter is accessible from above and it is a straightforward hour or so of labour. On some V6s, turbo diesels and anything where the starter sits under the intake manifold, it takes considerably longer.
As a guide, most starter motor replacements land between $450 and $950 fitted, with common Toyota, Mazda, Hyundai and Holden units at the lower end and European or hard-access engines at the top. We give you a firm price before we start, and and $150 covers the callout and your first hour on site.
Where a quality reconditioned unit is available and sensible, we will offer it as the cheaper option and tell you honestly how it compares to new.
