Symptoms of a failing alternator

How we test the charging system
A proper diagnosis takes minutes and saves hundreds. We measure resting battery voltage, then charging voltage with the engine running — a healthy system sits around 13.8 to 14.6 volts. We load the system with the lights, blower and rear demister on to see whether output holds up.
We also check for AC ripple, which shows failing diodes inside the alternator, and inspect the drive belt, tensioner and wiring. Sometimes the fix is a $60 belt or a corroded main cable, not a $900 alternator, and we would rather find that.
Alternator replacement cost on the Gold Coast
Most alternator replacements come in between $550 and $1,200 fitted. The part itself is the bulk of it, and access decides the labour — some sit at the top of the engine and take under an hour, while others need the serpentine belt, an engine mount or part of the front end out of the way.
Diesel utes, European models and anything with a smart charging system generally cost more, because the replacement often has to be matched or coded to the vehicle. We quote the part and the labour before we start, so nothing is a surprise.
If the battery has been repeatedly drained by the failing alternator, it may need replacing too — we test it rather than assume, and tell you either way.
Can you drive with a bad alternator?
Only briefly. Once the alternator stops charging, the car is running entirely off the battery, and most vehicles get 20 to 40 minutes before the engine cuts out — often at night with the lights on, when the drain is worst. Power steering and brake assist go with it.
