A yellow check engine light: tell us what changed
When booking a check engine light check, describe more than the colour of the lamp. Tell us whether it stays on or flashes, whether the engine runs normally, and whether you noticed anything before it appeared. Hard starting, uneven running, lost power, a new noise or a change in fuel use gives the mechanic useful context. A photo of the dashboard and your make, model, year and registration help identify the warning you mean.
Do not assume a yellow light means the car is safe to keep using. Follow the instructions in your vehicle handbook. If the engine is running roughly, the temperature is rising, another urgent warning appears or the vehicle feels unsafe, stop in a safe place and call before driving further. We can discuss attending where the car is parked rather than asking you to drive it to a workshop first.
Is a car spanner light the same thing?
A spanner symbol is not a universal diagnosis. Its meaning depends on the vehicle, so the handbook and the exact dashboard message matter. Tell us whether there is a service reminder, an engine warning or a message about reduced performance alongside it. Include the kilometres and when the car was last serviced. That helps distinguish a maintenance enquiry from a fault that needs investigation.
We offer both manufacturer-scheduled servicing and scan-tool diagnostics. If a service is due, the work should follow the car's schedule rather than just removing the reminder. If there is a fault, clearing a warning without establishing why it appeared is not the same as repairing the vehicle. Explain which light you see when you call so we can plan the appropriate visit.
On-site scan and repair: what the diagnosis involves
Our computer diagnostic service includes a multi-module fault-code scan, live data and sensor testing, an explanation of the findings and a quote before repairs begin. A stored code is a starting point. It tells us where to investigate, but it does not by itself prove that the named sensor or component needs replacement. We test the relevant circuit, sensor or component before recommending parts.
Bring together the history you already know: recent repairs, a battery replacement, an intermittent warning or the circumstances when the fault occurs. A problem that only happens after starting, while accelerating or once the engine is warm needs that context. Do not deliberately reproduce a dangerous symptom for us. Describe what happened and leave the car safely parked if you are unsure about moving it.
Related symptoms help direct the checks
A warning light alongside a no-start may need starting, charging or fuel-system checks as well as the scan. An electrical concern may require wiring or connection testing. A diesel with a DPF warning or lost power needs assessment of the diesel system rather than treating every dashboard lamp as the same problem. We provide these services, but the symptoms and test results determine what your car actually needs.
Tell us about other lights separately. ABS and airbag warnings involve different systems from an engine warning. Our diagnostic equipment covers more than engine codes on supported vehicles, including ABS, airbag, transmission and body modules. Give us your vehicle details first so we can discuss coverage; do not book a particular replacement part simply because an online code description suggests it.
We come to the car, with suitable access
A driveway or permitted workplace parking space can make an on-site check practical without a separate workshop drop-off. We cover the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads, with hours of 6am to 6pm, seven days a week. Tell us the full address and where the vehicle is parked. For apartments, include the car-park entrance, height clearance and any gate or building restrictions.
Mobile diagnosis does not mean every repair can be completed in every location. Some work needs workshop equipment or specialist attention. If that is the case, we explain the findings and what needs to happen next. A safe working position matters more than proximity: a traffic lane or restricted public bay is not automatically suitable just because the car has stopped there.
The callout price and what happens next
$150 covers the callout and first hour on site. Further work depends on the identified fault, parts and access, and we quote before a repair begins. If we genuinely cannot help at all, you do not pay. If we diagnose and identify the fault, the $150 applies even if a specialist or workshop must carry out the repair. There is no promise that every warning-light problem is a one-hour fix.
Once the agreed repair is completed, the diagnostic service includes clearing codes and a road test where appropriate. We explain the work rather than simply switching a light off. To arrange a visit, call with your vehicle details, warning message, symptoms and parking address. You can then discuss realistic availability and the right next step for the car, without guessing at parts or risking another unnecessary drive.
Frequently asked questions
Can you check an engine light at my home?
Yes. We offer mobile scan-tool diagnostics at suitable homes and workplaces across the Gold Coast and Tweed Heads. Give us the vehicle details and access information before booking.
Can I drive with a yellow check engine light?
The light alone does not establish that the car is safe. Follow your vehicle handbook. If it runs roughly, overheats or feels unsafe, stop safely and call before driving further.
Will a scan tell you exactly which part to replace?
Not by itself. A code directs the investigation; testing the relevant circuit, sensor or component establishes what needs repair before parts are recommended.
How much does the callout cost?
$150 covers the callout and first hour on site. Further repairs are quoted before work begins. The diagnosis fee applies when we identify the fault, even if its repair needs a specialist or workshop.
